The Department of Agronomy at Kansas State University provides statewide leadership in teaching, research, and extension in crop, soil, and range sciences. Weed science, crop breeding, climatology, genetics, environmental science, water science, and protecting soil and water resources are also important components of the mission of the department. Advances in these sciences have major impact on transforming the bounty of the natural resources of Kansas into the present standard of living enjoyed by its people, as well as providing significant advantages at the national and international levels.

A study by a team of university and government scientists led by a Kansas State University researcher, indicates that genes responsible for seed shattering – the process by which grasses disseminate their seeds – were under parallel selection during sorghum, rice and maize domestication.

New Drone Aircraft to Act as Crop Scout
Kevin Price, Ph.D., a K-State professor in agriculture/natural resources/remote sensing/GIS has teamed up with a talented radio-controlled aircraft hobbyist, Deon van der Merwe, Ph.D., an associate professor and head of the Toxicology Section at the K-State Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, to develop a very high-resolution airborne imaging system that will carry a near infrared, and a natural color camera at the same time.
